After celebrating the season of Christmas we now begin a time which the Church calls “Ordinary time of the year”. From our Diocesan Directory we can see how well it describes this time. The whole mystery of Christ, from His Incarnation to the day of Pentecost, and the expectation of his Second Coming, is recalled by the Church during the course of the year. There are thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in the course of the year which celebrate no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ. Instead, especially on the last Sunday, the Mystery of Christ in all its fullness is celebrated. This is known as the Solemnity of Christ the Saviour. This period is known as ordinary time (General Norms for the Liturgical year n.43.) The first of these periods of time will last up until Ash Wednesday when the season of Lent begins. It always starts with “The Baptism of the Lord”. When I reflect on this period, I have truly to ask myself how well did I celebrate the season of Advent & Christmas. Did I take the opportunity to be reconciled the Saviour of World or did I just go through those seasons like a non Christian. If so let myself reflect to take the opportunity to be reconciled in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is well worthwhile to take advantage of the experience despite your fear. It can be accompanied with time for spiritual direction. And sure we priests, and people need it. So let what we consider as ordinary time in the life of the Church, be an extraordinary time in the life of Christ who is our Saviour and King. The way we can experience this extraordinary time is by letting us receive the confidence more and more in understanding God’s Love, both as individuals and as a Community. We need to pray for each other to have such an experience.
Your Brother in Christ Ian
